Honor. Duty. Country.

While watching a documentary on Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, mention was made of the oath he took as a student soldier at West Point, which includes the words, Honor, Duty, and Country. I was again reminded when perusing the website, Veterans Today, that these words continue to be cherished and promised today, over one-hundred and fifty years later.

These three words may be only words to you and to me, ordinary citizens of the United States of America. To our Servicemen and women, however, they are a code to live by as they serve our country. They live with honor. They do their duty and they serve their country.

And then it crosses my mind. To some, Robert E. Lee was one of the greatest soldiers in the history of the United States, and I'm sure there are others who would expand that to include the entire world.

Did he abide by the oath taken?

He was a top cadet at West Point, paid for entirely by the United States Government. Did he owe the government of his country anything in return, or is it perfectly acceptable that if given an option of supporting your government, or the enemy of your government, the soldier has a right to choose?

Republican Study Committee Can't Tell a Truth

Republican Study Committee Chairman, Tom Price of Georgia, released the following statement:

“Liberals in Washington insist on giving terrorists a timetable for our withdrawal from Afghanistan, but they are unable to stick to a timetable for funding our troops in harm’s way,” said Chairman Price. “This funding was requested months ago, and the Pentagon made perfectly clear that delaying it beyond July 4th would disrupt military operations. But instead of looking after our men and women in uniform, Democrats have continually stalled consideration of this vital legislation. They have wasted precious time deliberating amongst themselves how to add billions more in un-related funding to what should be a clean, targeted package of resources for those who are defending our nation. This is sadly par for the course under the current majority. Last year, Democrats larded up a war supplemental with Cash for Clunkers and $5 billion for the IMF to bailout other countries.

“Republicans understand that our military deserves better, and the President could sign this defense funding into law tomorrow if not for the irresponsible actions of the majority. It is a failure of leadership by Congressional Democrats that has allowed this money for our troops to be held hostage to further deficit expanding bailouts. That is unacceptable.”

Note: On June 16, Politico reported that, “Funding for the Navy and Marine Corps will begin to run out in July, forcing the Pentagon to disrupt other programs. And by early to mid-August, the military may have to start furloughing civilians and might not be able to pay members of the active-duty military. ‘We begin to have to do stupid things if the supplemental is not passed by July 4,’ [Secretary of Defense Robert] Gates said during a wideranging Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee hearing that provided him with an opportunity to press for supplemental funding.”

Late Thursday night, the House approved legislation providing additional funding for the [Republican] war in Afghanistan, 239-182. Of the 177 Republicans in the House, only 10 voted for the funding.

Who Hates Their Country?

I try to be well-rounded, so I often visit blogs from both ends of the poltical spectrum. I even tried to watch FOX News on occasion. I tried, but failed. After just a few minutes of watching the lies, I would be so amazed that the FCC allows them to continue to broadcast without a disclaimer, I am forced to change the channel.

It seems my visits to right-wing blogs are soon coming to an end, as well.

I've gotten accustomed to a certain basic level of right-wing bullshit. As you may remember from earlier posts, I think that's all most Republicans have to sell. If they openly discussed their true feelings and the contempt they have for the average voter, they wouldn't nearly as many supporters.

No matter how many times officials of the Hawaii State government issue statements proving that President-elect Barack Obama was born in that state, the right-wingers aren't going to let it go. They'll just come up with some nut who will argue that the document was Photoshopped. I've resigned myself to that fact that the truth doesn't influence them. I used to leave comments attacking the flimsy arguments put forth by the wingnuts. No longer will I waste my time, and theirs.

Actually, I had hoped that that tempers would cool after Election Day. I'm often reminded how naive I am.

But, under a banner labeled "Support Our Troops", I thought the attached photo went just a little far. Maybe I'm too sensitive. I'm certainly not very bright. But, when it comes to supporting our troops who are fighting Bush's wars, you would think the neocons would be more honorable than to suggest our nation committed suicide on Election Day.
