I'm at a convention of over 3,000 delegates, and all week long we've
been discussing Obama's possible pick for VP. Most of the talk has
centered on Governor Richardson, Senator Clinton, and Senator Biden.
I've been a Biden fan from the beginning, and didn't quite believe that
he was no longer in consideration, even after he told reporters "He's
Not the Guy."
It's obvious Republicans will make this the nastiest campaign in
American history. The same people involved in the "swift-boating" of
Senator John Kerry in 2004 are already gearing up to do the same with
Senator Obama. They'll take his strongest attributes, and go directly
at them. It's unfortunate they were handed a partial play book by the
Clinton campaign, but that's what happens in politics.
I'm convinced Obama needs a smart, articulate attack dog.
Senator Clinton ran a good campaign in the primaries, but she lost. Her
supporters, no matter how they naive they appear to be, are not facing
facts -- the Republicans would have destroyed her by dragging us
through a rehash of the attacks on the Clintons in the 1990s, and
beyond. She would have been preoccupied playing defense, and unable to
defend the Democratic ticket from the Rush Limbaughs and Fox news.
Of course, they'll try to do the same to Biden. I'm predicting they'll
have less success than they had with the Clintons, and while they're
missing with their attacks on Biden, he'll be punching them in the
chops. With his extensive experience in foreign affairs, Republicans
are less likely to argue they're better qualified to deal with
terrorists, unless they count the terrorists within their party who
bomb family planning clinics and firebomb churches.
Biden is the right pick. He'll defend Senator Obama, and go on the
attack when it's deemed necessary. It once again proves that Obama is
thoughtful, smart, and will put together an administration of experts.
